Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge), the definitive icon of Kolkata from 1943 was lit up in Colours of Gold and Magenta on 23rd November, 2006. The illumination ceremony was inaugurated by Sri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal in presence of Rt. Hon. Ian McCartney, Hon'ble Minister for Trade, Investment and Foreign Affairs, U.K., Shri Ashok Bhattacharaya, Hon'ble Minister-in-Charge,Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Department, Govt. of West Bengal. Shri Kshiti Goswami, Hon'ble Minister-in-Charge, Public Works Department, Govt. of West Bengal, Shri Amit Kiran Deb, IAS Chief Secretary, Govt. of West Bengal, Mr. Simon Wilson, British Deputy High Commissioner, Kolkata and a host of other dignitaries. A cultural extravaganza in the form of a dance drama 'Krishnamadhuri' by Gurukul Creative under the direction of Sutapa Talukdar and dazzling fireworks display from vessels in the river made the occasion a memorable one.
